WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced that Leonardo Flores, a student at Edinburg High School, is the winner of the 2018 Congressional Art Competition. This year's theme for the 15th District of Texas was ‘Home of the Brave,' a celebration of our men and women in uniform.

Mr. Flores' winning piece, ‘John 4:18,' will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Congressional art competition winners are awarded a trip to Washington, D.C., and receive a $3,000 art scholarship to attend Savannah College of Arts and Design, or Tennessee Wesleyan College.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez's (TX-15) amendment to H.R. 5515, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019, passed the House. The amendment urges high schools with U.S. Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) to include cybersecurity education in their coursework.

WASHINGTON—On Tuesday, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) spoke on the House Floor to condemn the House Majority's restrictive process as they break their own closed rule record, making the 115th Congress the most closed Congress in American history.

There have now been 84 closed rules this Congress, which block all amendments from both Democratic and Republican Members on policies such as veteran services, healthcare, and job creation. These important policies deserve a debate – and a vote – on the House Floor, yet they are routinely blocked.

WASHINGTON—Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) recently sent a letter to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Mark S. Inch, regarding last year's prison inmate walk offs from the Satellite Prison Camp (SPC) in Three Rivers, Texas. This repeat offense has been compounded by the fact that prison facilities have consistently remained understaffed. In the letter, Congressman Gonzalez emphasized that these incidents could endanger South Texans and requested that the Federal Bureau of Prisons act swiftly to address this issue.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced that the Office of Head Start, within the Administration for Children and Families, has awarded the Hidalgo County Head Start Program $13,254,121 in program funding. This grant will help implement comprehensive child development programs that prepare young students, ages three to four, from low-income families for pre-school.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) has released the following statement regarding the House Committee on Rules' failure to make in order his amendment that would have added the congressman's deported veterans bill, H.R. 3429, the Repatriate Our Patriots Act, to S. 2372, the VA MISSION Act of 2018:

"Obstructing efforts to help honorably discharged veterans who have been unjustly deported is tantamount to disrespecting their service and sacrifice. Actions speak louder than words.

WASHINGTON—Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is now accepting applications for the Community Facilities Technical Assistance and Training (TAT) Grant Program. These grants are intended to help small, low-income rural communities address gaps in resources and staff. Applications are due Monday, July 2, 2018.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced that the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) has awarded approximately $3.6 million in federal funding to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine's South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute (STDOI). Funding will be used to evaluate 1,000 Mexican Americans from large families and examine how environmental factors can contribute to the development of fatty liver disease.
