June 27, 2018

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued the following statement in response to news that First Lady Melania Trump will once again visit with immigrant children separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

On Wednesday morning, Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner David Fuentes also sent a letter inviting Mrs. Trump to witness the devastation and loss of property the Rio Grande Valley suffered after severe flooding.

"My wife, Lorena, and I would like to welcome Mrs. Trump back to the Rio Grande Valley," Congressman Gonzalez said. "We invite her to witness the devastation and loss as well as the resiliency and the strength of our region. Commissioner Fuentes, and all of us in South Texas, look forward to giving her an accurate representation of our communities."

"I would like to extend an invitation to you to visit our affected area during your next trip to South Texas, so that you can bear witness to the extent of damage sustained and the lives that have been impacted," County Commissioner Fuentes said. "You will see an area that Mother Nature may have damaged, but I am confident that you will also see a resilient family of communities that are working together and helping each other to rebuild a better tomorrow."
