Congressman Gonzalez Announces Federal Disaster Declaration from FEMA for Hidalgo and Cameron Counties
WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) has announced that President Donald J. Trump has approved a federal disaster request for Individual Assistance for Cameron and Hidalgo Counties. The declaration follows severe weather in June that caused up to seven feet of flooding in some areas of the Rio Grande Valley.
Congressman Gonzalez is encouraging residents to apply for this assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“I would like to thank local, state, and federal officials for their combined efforts to assess the damage in Cameron and Hidalgo Counties,” Congressman Gonzalez said. “I thank President Trump for approving our request, which will allow us to recover and rebuild. I urge all people affected to seek assistance from FEMA. Our office stands ready to assist on Monday morning.”

On Friday, June 22, 2018, Congressman Gonzalez sent a letter to President Donald J. Trump and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator William B. Long requesting federal support and relief to the Rio Grande Valley.
On Monday, June 25, 2018, the congressman sent a letter to Texas Governor Greg Abbott requesting the governor contact President Trump and FEMA Administrator William B. Long to formally request a federal disaster declaration.
On Tuesday, June 26, 2018, Congressman Gonzalez’s outreach to Governor Abbott to was answered with support. Congressmen Gonzalez, Henry Cuellar (TX-28), Filemon Vela (TX-34), and Governor Abbott all called on President Trump to act.
On Thursday, July 5, 2018, Congressman Gonzalez sent a second letter to President Trump and FEMA Administrator William B. Long reiterating the need for federal support and relief to the Rio Grande Valley.
On Friday, July 6, 2018, President Trump announced the federal declaration for Texas that will make individual assistance available for the Cameron and Hidalgo Counties.
