The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley throughout the month of June held its popular University Transportation Center for Railway Safety summer camps on the Edinburg Campus.

The four week-long camps make up the largest railway safety-related camp in the nation, with more than 1,000 third- through 12th-graders in attendance this year.

The Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate House Democrats, has formed a Task Force on National Defense, co-chaired by Reps. Vicente Gonzalez of Texas and Brad Schneider of Illinois.

The task force, according to a statement from Gonzalez, "will proactively promote a strong national defense, improve the lives of our service members and veterans and ensure American global leadership."

Freshman Rep. Vicente González (D-Texas) has launched a Congressional Oil and Gas Caucus with the aim of educating fellow lawmakers about related issues.

González wants the group to focus on the production and distribution of oil, gas and other petroleum hydrocarbons, including crude oil, natural gas and gas liquids.

When the former lawyer, who represents South Texas' 15th District, first arrived on the Hill, he described himself as an oil and gas man.

President Donald Trump's actions and rhetoric regarding immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border have led some South Texas lawmakers to urge him to spend time in the Rio Grande Valley.

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-McAllen) again asked the president to visit Texas when he met with Trump Monday night for a private White House dinner with a small group of House members.

Gonzalez says he discussed border security, infrastructure, tax reform and the deportation of veterans with the president.

The Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council has passed a resolution that will form the basis of the Valley's message when 35 or so of its local leaders visit Washington this week.

The leaders are participating in the first ever RGV to DC trip. Organized by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, Rio South Texas Economic Council, and LRGVDC, the visit runs June 12-15.

Gonzalez was joined by Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) and other state representatives from New Mexico, Arizona and California.
