Daniela González Rendon has 265 days until her work authorization and protection from deportation — granted under DACA — expire.

The 22-year-old Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi general business major is among the 534,310 DACA recipients who were blocked from renewing their protections on Sept. 5, when the federal government announced the winding down of the program, according to data from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

On Tuesday morning, the office of Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced plans to open a district office in Seguin. Gonzalez indicated in a news release that the office will be designed to serve residents in the northern counties of the district.

According to the news release, the office would serve "the residents of Guadalupe, Karnes, Live Oak, and Wilson counties."

Gonzalez spoke on his enthusiasm for the new office, saying that he welcomes the opportunity to serve Guadalupe County residents.

McALLEN — The U.S. Census Bureau will open an area office in Hidalgo County to ensure everyone in South Texas is properly counted in 2020 — instead of relying only on a regional office based in San Antonio.

Every 10 years the federal government takes self-reported population counts to help officials make a slew of important decisions, including how to distribute federal dollars to states, how many congressional districts are needed and even how many judges should serve an area.

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, visited troops in Afghanistan over the weekend to share a Thanksgiving meal, his office announced late Sunday.

Gonzalez was one of eight members of a bipartisan delegation from Congress to visit the war-torn country. He also visited with troops and saw military installations in Poland, Qatar and Uzbekistan, his office said.

"I was both humbled and honored to spend Thanksgiving with the brave men and women of our U.S. armed forces in Afghanistan," Gonzalez said in a written statement.

The House Natural Resources Committee approved legislation on Wednesday that would modernize mineral resource practices and overhaul permitting processes to promote energy development on the outer continental shelf (OCS) and onshore federal acreage.

The full committee approved the Strengthening the Economy with Critical Untapped Resources (SECURE) American Energy Act, H.R. 4239, after the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources heard testimony from energy industry stakeholders during a hearing on Tuesday.

McALLEN -- Over 250 families and more than 2,000 individuals enjoyed an unusually brisk morning in the fifth annual Step Up for Down Syndrome Awareness Walk at the McAllen Sports Park.

Deborah Tomai, president of the Rio Grande Valley Down Syndrome Association, has a six-year-old son with Down Syndrome. When he was first diagnosed, like many mothers, she wondered "what life might look like for him."

MCALLEN, RGV – U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez says he supports a "smart wall" to improve border security but not a physical barrier.

Gonzalez gave the keynote address at the 8th annual Valley Environmental Summit. Sponsored by the Valley Environmental Coalition, it was held at the Embassy Suites in McAllen. It was titled, "Our True Nature … Environmental Initiatives for Regional Impact."

Building a "smart wall" using resources such as radar, fiber optics, drones and detection cameras would bring "real" border security, said the McAllen Democrat.
