WASHINGTON - Congressman Vicente Gonzalez today issued the following statement following media reports that President Donald J. Trump will be visiting the U.S.-Mexico Border, potentially McAllen, Texas.

President Trump is scheduled to visit McAllen on Thursday to address what he called the crisis at the southern border, which comes amid attempts to persuade the nation of the need for a border wall, the sticking point in negotiations with congressional Democrats that led to a government shutdown.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Soon after being sworn into office for the 116th Congress, the three U.S. Representatives for the South Texas border region voted for legislation that would end the partial government shutdown without funding a border wall.

The bill passed by 239-192, with five Republicans joining every Democrat in supporting the measure.

Vicente Gonzalez, "In the 116th Congress, we will put an end to this dog and pony show and get the federal government back to work for the people."

Amid the partial federal government shutdown, President Donald Trump tweeted an ultimatum Friday morning directed at Congress: Fund his promised border wall or the United States-Mexico border will "close."

"Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border …" one of Trump's four tweets about the border said in part.

If President Donald Trump follows up on his threat to close the southern border, it could potentially result in millions of dollars in losses to local businesses in regions such as San Diego County.
