WASHINGTON - Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) sent a letter to President Donald J. Trump urging his administration to extend federal unemployment insurance benefits, which are set to run out at the end of July without action by the White House and U.S. Senate.

MCALLEN, Texas – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued a statement following the passing of Border Patrol agent Enrique J. Rositas due to COVID-19:

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Border Patrol agent Enrique J. Rositas at this time. We mourn his loss and must recognize the other lives that have been affected by COVID-19. I will not rest until we secure the resources and aid South Texas needs to prevent additional deaths by this deadly virus."

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) sent a letter to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Alex Azar requesting the federal government provide additional financial support and stand up a field hospital to help respond to the COVID-19 surge in the Rio Grande Valley. Congressmen Filemon Vela (TX-34) and Henry Cuellar (TX-28) and Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) also joined the letter.

MCALLEN, Texas – Today, Congressmen Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) and Filemon Vela (TX-34) called on Governor Greg Abbott to issue stay-at-home orders in regions of the state most affected by the overwhelming surge of COVID-19 cases. South Texas has been hit particularly hard with a surge in cases in the entire region, with one in 10 deaths of COVID-19 recorded in Hidalgo County. Additionally, 10 of the 12 hospitals in Hidalgo, Cameron and Starr County are at capacity.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) called out Mr. Trump's plan to cut federal funds for public schools if they do not fully reopen in the fall:

"Donald Trump should be ashamed of himself. Threatening to cut federal funds if schools do not fully reopen is disgraceful. This a ploy that will endanger students, teachers and parents in the hopes of improving the U.S. economy for his re-election campaign. Our children shouldn't be used as pawns in his political game because he failed as a leader."
