Congressmen Gonzalez & Vela Urge South Texans to Complete the Census

May 28, 2020

MCALLEN, Texas – Next week, Congressmen Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) and Filemon Vela (TX-34) will deliver messages via phone to remind constituents to complete the once-a-decade Census.

"We have an opportunity to shape the future of a generation of people just by answering the 2020 Census," said Congressman Gonzalez. "Historically, our districts have been undercounted and our communities have missed out on millions of dollars in funding for public programs. We cannot afford for that to happen. Whether it's by mail, phone, or online, we all have a civic responsibility to respond to the Census."

"The results of the once-a-decade Census will determine the allocation of hundreds of billions of federal dollars in the next decade," said Congressman Vela. "Unfortunately, our state's response rate is lagging behind that of the rest of the nation, and our communities are lagging behind the state's response rate," added Vela. "I am calling on South Texans to fill out the Census so that our community does not miss out on millions of dollars to help our schools, build our highways, support hospitals and first responders, to name a few. Our participation and response will ensure that we are not undercounted and that South Texas receives its fair share of federal funds."

The deadline to fill out the Census has been extended to October 31, 2020. To complete the census by telephone, please dial 844-330-2020. To complete the census by telephone, in Spanish, please dial 844-468-2020. To complete the Census online, please visit my2020census.gov.
