Congressmen Gonzalez and Wilson Introduce Resolution Recognizing Anniversary of Syrian Revolution Against al-Assad

March 15, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Congressmen Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) and Joe Wilson (R-SC), both members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced a resolution recognizing the 11th anniversary of the Syrian revolution against Bashar al-Assad.

This resolution, in part, commends the bravery of the Syrian people who, on March 15, 2011, rose up in protest against the brutal Assad regime at the risk of their own safety.

"Driven by their desire for freedom and a more equal society, the Syrian people rose up against the tyrannical and murderous Assad regime," stated Congressman Gonzalez. "Their fight for democracy was met with repression and devolved into a humanitarian crisis like the world has never seen. As we commemorate the anniversary of the Syrian Revolution, we must continue to raise awareness about the situation in Syria and redouble our efforts to hold the Assad regime accountable for their war crimes."

"Eleven years ago, the people of Syria peacefully stood up for freedom from oppression by the Assad regime only to be met with bullets, torture, and death. Half a million Syrians have been killed by Assad and his backers and over 13 million have been forced to flee their communities. On this anniversary of the Syrian revolution, we recommit ourselves to honoring their sacrifices and securing justice for the Syrian people. Assad and his backers will be held accountable for the countless crimes against humanity," said Congressman Joe Wilson.
