Congressmen Gonzalez and Vela Announce $850,000 in Funds for Expansion and Improvement of Weslaco Mid-Valley Airport

September 25, 2019

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressmen Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) and Filemon Vela (TX-34) announced that the Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded $850,000 in federal funding to construct two new hangars and extend the runway at the Weslaco Mid-Valley Airport.

As part of the expansion, the airport will add aviation capacity and aim to make the Lower Rio Grande Valley more resilient and marketable to expanding businesses. The project is expected to create new jobs, attract millions in private investment and drive regional economic growth. The Weslaco Mid-Valley airport is located in-between McAllen and Harlingen, where they serve private and general aviation needs.

"This EDA award is an investment not only in the Weslaco Mid-Valley Airport but in the entire region," said Congressman Gonzalez. "Upgrading our infrastructure opens doors for our community and improves our quality of life. These projects are essential to the City of Weslaco and the region. That is why I will continue to advocate for federal funds that take South Texas to the next level. "

"Expansion of the Weslaco Mid-Valley Airport will bring job opportunities and increased economic development to the City of Weslaco," said Congressman Vela. "EDA's award of federal funds will allow South Texas the opportunity to showcase a viable location for expanding businesses."

"We are extremely happy to hear we will be receiving this grant from EDA," said Weslaco Mayor David Suarez. "This will help us grow our general aviation in the mid valley which will be good for the whole region."
The project is anticipated to cost $1.4 million, create 10 new jobs and leverage $8 million in private investment.

EDA grants are awarded through a competitive process based upon the application's merit, the applicant's eligibility, and the availability of funds. More information on EDA loans is available here.
