July 14, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) celebrated July 4th in Santander with the King of Spain, Felipe VI, and Spanish counterparts. The Spanish honored the American delegation with a spectacular event of July 4th festivities including a firework show over the bay of Santander. U.S. Senator Ben Ray Lujan from New Mexico, Honorary Chairman of the U.S.—Spain Council, and other Members of Congress and business leaders from Spain and the United States.

This year’s forum included high-level discussions centered on energy efficiency, transportation infrastructure, and the use of Artificial Intelligence to bring about new advancements in both sectors.

Congressman Gonzalez participated on a panel focused on energy. The United States-Spain Council Santander Forum is an annual meeting of public and private sector leaders that strengthen bilateral relations between the U.S. and Spain by discussing key economic, technological, political, and cultural issues of common interests.

The partnership recognized the Rio Grande Valley as New Santander—a region once part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, reminding us of the Spanish heritage that is still visible in South Texan culture and identity today.

“Those of us from South Texas know all too well the importance of affordable energy and energy independence,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Last week’s visit allowed me to connect with our foreign partners and industry members to explore the benefits of modernizing our power infrastructure. I was proud to visit Spain and represent both South Texas and the United States. I look forward to working with American energy leaders to expand their reach into European markets through Spanish import terminals. It is important we strengthen our bilateral commitment and cultural connections with the Iberian peninsula. I look forward to continuing to work with our partners on improving trade and business relations for years to come."
