CONGRESSMAN VICENTE GONZALEZ CELEBRATES PRESIDENTIAL PERMIT ALLOWING CAMERON COUNTY TO BUILD PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE AT GATEWAY INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE

August 22, 2025

Washington, D.C.— Yesterday, the Trump Administration granted a Presidential Permit to Cameron County to construct, maintain and operate a pedestrian border crossing at the Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville, Texas.

Cameron County requested this pedestrian bridge in December of 2024 to help alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety for the 12,000 people who cross the bridge on foot every day. This project will create a dedicated pedestrian path just upstream of the existing bridge, reducing conflicts between passenger vehicles and foot traffic.

“I would like to thank the Trump Administration for granting this permit. Every day people cross to go to work and attend school,” said Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34). “This project will provide students and families a safer way to travel while also reducing traffic that slows down commerce and daily life for our border community. This is an excellent example of how bipartisan support leads to great results for everyone involved.”

Congressman Gonzalez has consistently advocated for efforts to expand the Gateway International Bridge and worked in a bipartisan way to secure $133 million in funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Congressman also worked with Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and other colleagues in the House and Senate to enact language in the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act to establish more bridges in South Texas.
