Congressman Gonzalez Votes to Pass the Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act

January 12, 2022

Washington, DC – On Wednesday, January 12, 2022, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) voted to pass H.R. 1836, the Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act. Since the September 11th attacks, these National Guard members and Reservists have seen heavier training schedules and more frequent deployments to support our national security and disaster response efforts. This bill would assure that these brave men and women, who often serve side-by-side with their Active-Duty counterparts, receive equal access to vital G.I. bill benefits.

Under current law, National Guard members and Reservists cannot accrue the vital education benefits they have earned for their increased workload.  The Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act addresses this disparity in the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill to ensure that members of the National Guard and Reserve have access to benefits that reflect their contributions to our safety and security.

"Time and time again, our National Guard and Reserve Members have stepped up to the plate during times of crisis yet remain ineligible for the benefits they deserve," said Congressman Gonzalez. "It is past time we close this gap. From supporting COVID-19 response efforts at hospitals and food banks to protecting the U.S. Capitol following the January 6th insurrection, our Guardsmen and Reservists have rightfully earned access to GI Bill benefits. I am proud to vote for this legislation and urge the Senate to pass it and send it to President Biden's desk for signature!"

The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration. More information can be found here.

Background:

  • National Guard and Reserve service members have been mobilized across the country to assist in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, Afghan refugee resettlement and so much more.
  • These service members do not have the same access to benefits, despite their dedication to the safety of our nation.
  • Article 38 of the United States Code ensures that members of the Armed Forces' service time qualify them for educational assistance under the Post-9/11 Educational Assistance Program.
  • This bill would ensure that Guard and Reserve members would be eligible for the same benefits while in uniform.
