CONGRESSMAN GONZALEZ VOTES IN FAVOR OF VETERAN SERVICE RECOGNITION ACT
Gonzalez Amendment to Implement Legislation Immediately Also Passed
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) voted in favor of H.R. 7946, the Veteran Service Recognition Act, which provides certain veterans a pathway to citizenship and brings home wrongfully deported veterans.
"I am proud to vote for this legislation and bring our veterans back home. It is unfathomable that our country has allowed for the deportation of those who put on the uniform and valiantly fought to protect us," stated Congressman Gonzalez. "Our veterans can't wait. Which is why I am proud my amendment to provide for the timely execution of the Veteran Service Recognition Act also passed. Anyone who's put their life on the line for our freedoms should not be repaid by being deported. It is past time that Congress address this injustice and this bill is a step in the right direction."
H.R. 7946, the Veteran Service Recognition Act, addresses immigration-related issues pertaining to noncitizen (or non-U.S. national) military veterans, including authorizing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide lawful permanent resident status to veterans who are subject to removal.
Congressman Gonzalez introduced and passed an amendment that would require DHS to implement this policy no later than 90-days after being signed into law. His floor speech can be found here.
