Congressman Gonzalez Votes to Approve Bipartisan Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (PAWS) for Veterans Therapy Act
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) voted to pass H.R. 4305, the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (PAWS) for Veterans Therapy Act. This bipartisan bill will give greater access for veterans to connect with service dogs in their communities. Congressman Gonzalez is a cosponsor of this important legislation.
The PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act will create a pilot program within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to give veterans access to treatment derived from working with service dogs. Specifically, the VA will partner with non-profit organizations who specialize in working with veterans and service dogs. Upon completion of the program, the veterans may adopt their dogs to continue therapy.
"Veterans who put their lives on the line for our nation often experience post-traumatic stress disorder and suffer mental health issues related to combat," said Congressman Gonzalez. "This bill is a way to expand treatment by giving veterans access to a working service dog to help with episodes of depression, provide a sense of security and calmness and a loving companion. I will always advocate for every available resource for veterans and champion their issues in Congress."
Between 11 and 30 percent of veterans experience PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Research conducted by Kaiser Permanente and Purdue University has shown that working with service dogs alleviates the symptoms of PTSD, leading to better interpersonal relationships, lower risk of substance abuse and overall better mental health.
