Congressman Gonzalez Urges Veterans & Disabled Americans in 15th District to Register for Child Payments by May 5

April 29, 2020

WASHINGTON– Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) is encouraging constituents, especially those veterans or disabled individuals, who have dependents to register their information with the Internal Revenue Service by Tuesday, May 5, 2020, to request an additional $500 child payment. This deadline applies to veterans receiving compensation for service-connected disabilities or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not file annual tax returns.

"I want to make sure that these Economic Impact Payments are going to the families that need them most," said Congressman Gonzalez. "The federal government has an obligation to ensure that the needs of the disabled, elderly and veterans are met. My office is here to assist any who have questions regarding registration."

Constituents with questions can contact Congressman Gonzalez's office at 888-217-0261 or at Gonzalez.House.gov/contact.

Disabled veterans and those receiving SSI are eligible for payments of $1,200 and also $500 payments for dependent children under 16 years of age. Because the IRS does not have information regarding dependents for these individuals, they must request these funds through an online portal at IRS.GOV by May 5.

Under the CARES Act, Americans with an income under $75,000 (or $150,000 if filing jointly) are eligible for Economic Impact Payments of $1,200 per adult along with a $500 payment for each child age 16 and younger. The IRS is processing the payments and sending them electronically to those who have bank information on file with the agency. Social Security recipients are scheduled to receive their payments to the account registered with Social Security beginning this week, and veterans and SSI recipients will receive funds electronically in mid-May.
