Congressman Gonzalez Statement on Trump Administration’s Continued Federal Funding Chaos at the Expense of South Texans

January 29, 2025

BROWNSVILLE, TX – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released a statement following the Trump Administration’s tumultuous actions regarding federal funding over the last 24 hours that offers no clarity for South Texas stakeholders, organizations, non-profits, and individuals.

"Over the last 24 hours the Trump Administration's freeze on federal funding has caused chaos, confusion, and uncertainty for South Texans. Aside from holding up critical federal funding, I remain deeply concerned by the conflicting and vague information coming out of this Administration.”

“Our health clinics, school districts, Head Start programs, water districts, police departments, cities, counties, housing authorities, and so many more need certainty about whether or not they can pay their employees or provide vital services to South Texans."

"I am also gravely concerned that the Trump Administration acted on federal funding without consulting Congress, who holds the power of the purse. If the Trump Administration and Republicans had their way, they would end Medicare and Medicaid benefits, funding for childcare and Title I schools, and food assistance for children and seniors. These are benefits that strongly benefit communities like mine, and while I am a steward of taxpayer money, this cannot be at the expense of the health and safety of older Americans, children, and everyone in between.”

“I strongly urge the White House to stop playing games with crucial federal funding, and to my Republican colleagues – we must govern responsibly and not toy around with the benefits and livelihoods of South Texans and ALL Americans on a whim.”
