Congressman Gonzalez Statement on Stopgap Measure to Avert a Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) voted yes on the final passage of H.R. 5860, the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2024, which funds the U.S. Government for the next 45 days.
“Today, I voted to keep our federal workers and servicemembers, including the thousands of Customs and Border Patrol officers in South Texas, fully paid by avoiding a needless government shutdown,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Although this bill is not perfect, and it was my hope to avoid this last-minute crisis had House Republicans only engaged in good-faith negotiations earlier, it is our duty as elected officials to meet in the middle and compromise. This bill provides much needed disaster relief to our nation, ensures our federal workforce and armed forces remain paid, protects our economy, does not include inhumane or wasteful border policies, and most importantly, averts a government shutdown. It is my hope that in the next 45 days we can build off this compromise, work together to fund our government, and serve the American people.”
