Congressman Gonzalez Statement on Reckless Trump Tax that Will Increase Prices for Hardworking South Texans

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS — Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released a statement following President Trump’s reckless 25 percent tariffs imposed on all products from Mexico, 10 percent tariffs on Chinese products, 10 percent tariffs on Canadian energy products, and 25 percent tariffs on all other products from Canada. These tariffs will raise the prices of everyday goods for South Texans. 

“The Rio Grande Valley is the epicenter for North American trade,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “However, President Trump’s reckless tariffs will lead to severe economic fallout for our region. His needless trade war does nothing to address the economic struggles many in the country are facing or the fentanyl epidemic that impacts our communities. Throwing acid on our international ties will only harm America’s efforts to stop the flow of illicit drugs. Instead of disrupting federal resources and starting pointless trade wars, the Trump Administration needs to commit to funding our understaffed and overworked border personnel who are on the ground stopping fentanyl and other dangerous substances from reaching our people.” 

“President Trump’s actions will only harm hardworking Americans by passing the cost onto them and increase the price of food, gas at the pump, electronics, clothing, furniture, and many other everyday items.
