Congressman Gonzalez Statement on Recent Arrests of Sinaloa Cartel Leaders in El Paso, Texas

July 26, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34), amember of the Bipartisan Congressional Task Force to Combat Mexican Drug Cartels, released a statement following the arrests of two alleged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López, in El Paso, Texas, by U.S. authorities.

“The Sinaloa Cartel runs one of the largest and most violent fentanyl production and trafficking operations in the world,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “This criminal organization is also responsible for the trafficking of tens of thousands of pounds of heroin, cocaine, and other dangerous drugs into the U.S. The effects of these drugs are widespread and continue to ravage communities and wreck individual lives through the ongoing opioid epidemic.”

“These recent arrests send a clear message to all cartels and criminal syndicates — that U.S. authorities will not stop until everyone responsible for harming any American is held accountable.”

Congressman Gonzalez joined the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat Mexican Drug Cartels during its inception in July 2023. He has since participated in various bipartisan delegations, including to Mexico City, where Task Force members and Mexican officials discussed how to prevent cartels’ criminal efforts.
