MCALLEN, Texas – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) released a statement following President Trump's overnight tweet about the Minneapolis protests and looting:

"Violence is never the answer. The footage of George Floyd was almost unbearable to watch. His death was tragic and avoidable.

Now is the time for systemic change to reform how law enforcement views and interacts with our communities.

People of color, Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians alike, have become increased targets of violence and hate crimes because of this president's rhetoric. His words have stoked xenophobia and hatred.

From the shootings in El Paso to the events in Charlottesville, his words have emboldened racism and given way to an America, I do not recognize.

It's time for change."
