Congressman Gonzalez Statement on Governor Abbott’s Disaster Declaration

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued a statement in response to the disaster declaration declared by Texas Governor Greg Abbott:

"I welcome Governor Abbot's disaster declaration if it helps fund our local law enforcement and sheriff departments in South Texas, especially counties just north of border like Brooks, Duval, Jim Hogg and many others. However, we need to make intelligent investments to tackle the crisis we face in three Central American countries where communities and families lack the economic opportunities and security to stay home. I have been vocal with the Biden administration, urging them to provide support to our border agents and to address the root causes of migration. Otherwise, I would encourage the Governor to focus on issues impacting Texans like making it easier, instead of harder, for eligible voters to vote and fixing the energy grid to prevent another very real crisis like the one we had during the freeze earlier this year."
