Congressman Gonzalez Statement Following President Trump’s Sweeping Pardons of January 6 Insurrectionists

January 22, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressmen Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released a statement following President Trump’s full, unconditional, and sweeping pardons of the destructive January 6 insurrectionists.

“I’m sickened to watch President Trump’s pardoning of over 1,000 criminals who tried to overthrow our government and prevent the peaceful transition of power. It is a shameful misuse of presidential powers. President Trump and his party have turned their backs on law enforcement all while using the slogan that they ‘back the blue.’ The decision to pardon and commute the sentences of insurrectionists, who pepper-sprayed, beat, and killed U.S. Capitol Police officers that were just doing their jobs, is not only a slap in the face to law enforcement officers across our country, but is abhorrent and un-American.”

“The United States of America used to set the example to the world for upholding the rule of law. Under Trump, it seems that has ended, and that our principles have regressed. It is truly a sad day. I will continue to stand with and protect the rights of our law enforcement and their families as I defend our constitution and traditional principles.”
