Congressman Gonzalez Statement on Border Wall Projects in Starr County

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released a statement following Sec. Mayorkas’s announcement to fast-track several miles of border wall construction in Starr County. 

“Walls are simply not an effective solution to the migration issue at our southern border,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “While it’s my understanding that the Biden Administration's projects were announced in June, and that by law, these funds previously appropriated by the Trump Administration must be used, the fact remains that walls are not a good use of taxpayer money. Walls may have worked in the times of marauding armies and castles, but this is a medieval solution to a modern problem. Any viable solution must deal with the root causes of migration and must include ways to process migrants and asylum seekers well before they reach our southern border. Furthermore, any viable solution will also include working with Mexico and holding them accountable for migrant crossings on their southern border.”
