Congressman Gonzalez Statement on Administration's NAFTA Negotiating Objectives

July 17, 2017

WASHINGTON— Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued the following statement regarding the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiating objectives outlined by the United States Trade Representative.

"For more than 20 years, businesses and communities in South Texas have flourished under the deal, and NAFTA remains an important economic driver for our local economy," Congressman Gonzalez said.

"However, NAFTA is two decades old and we now have an opportunity to update and modernize the agreement to reflect technological advancements and other changes. I look forward to reviewing the Administration's objectives and working with United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to ensure we build upon the tremendous growth we have experienced in South Texas while also bringing NAFTA and all of our trade practices into the 21st Century."

"There is always room for improvement and I am open to working with my colleagues across the aisle, and the administration, to ensure that South Texans are heard and that NAFTA 2.0 works for all Americans," said Congressman Gonzalez.
