Congressman Gonzalez’s Statement Regarding the Kidnappings and Death of Americans in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico

March 7, 2023

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released the following statement after learning about the deaths of two of the four U.S. Citizens who were assaulted and kidnapped in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, on March 3, 2023:

"My heart goes out to the families of those found in Matamoros. The pain of losing a loved one to such senseless violence is unimaginable. I call on the Government of Mexico to continue to work in collaboration with American officials and bring those responsible for this horrific crime to justice. The cartel violence we have seen just across our Southern border has cost two more Americans their lives and needs to come to an end.

"It is time we start treating cartels as terrorist organizations and work with the Mexican government, who is our closest and biggest trading partner, to dismantle cartels.

"Congress and President Biden must act now before any more people lose their lives."

The State of Tamaulipas, Mexico, where Matamoros is located, has been designated by the U.S State Department as a "Level 4: Do not travel" due to constant threats of violence, kidnappings, and assaults.
