Congressman Gonzalez Responds to Steel and Aluminum Tariffs Imposed by the Trump Administration

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) has issued the following statement in response to President Donald J. Trump's decision to levy steel and aluminum tariffs on the European Union, Canada, and Mexico:

"By ending temporary tariff exemptions for key trading partners and allies, Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, the administration has failed to recognize that our actions have far reaching consequences. Our trade policy must be free, fair, and enforceable but it must also be thoughtful. We cannot make decisions in a vacuum, we must consider the entire picture. If the administration continues to pursue an indiscriminate approach, the lives and livelihoods of so many in South Texas and across the country that depend on access to NAFTA and other markets could be in jeopardy."
