Congressman Gonzalez Praises Farmworkers During COVID-19 Pandemic

April 2, 2020
Press Release

MCALLEN, Texas – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) praised farmers, ranchers, farmworkers, packers, shippers, and all those across our food supply chain for their efforts to keep our nation fed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This group of people are considered essential in the country’s workforce. If they want to work and are healthy to do so, then they can work and are allowed to travel to work during this difficulty time for our country with some areas of the United States calling for a shelter-in-place order:

“To all of those working tirelessly to grow, harvest, pack, and transport America’s food and fiber, we salute you,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “You are an essential part of our economy, and we depend on you. If you are willing and able to work, I would encourage you to continue doing so. I stand with our farmworkers and supply chain workers and thank them for their service during this time.”

While Hidalgo, Cameron and other counties in South Texas have instituted shelter-in-place orders, agriculture and farmworkers are considered essential workers. If agriculture workers still want to work, they are permitted to travel and work because of their essential work status.
