Congressman Gonzalez Issues Statement Regarding the Wrongful Termination of U.S. House Chaplain

April 30, 2018

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued the following statement regarding the decision to abruptly relinquish U.S. House of Representatives Chaplain, Father Patrick Conroy, of his position only months before his two-year term finished:

"It has been a privilege to know Father Conroy during my first term in Congress. Even in the face of heightened tensions and political turbulence, his integrity, grace, and professionalism are unwavering.

"During one of the most complicated times in recent political history, and as a freshman congressman, Father Conroy was always a steady hand of common sense I could rely on.

"To terminate a man who has provided invaluable counsel and solace to members and staff alike, without explanation, is unconscionable.

"When partisan politics impact the Chaplain of the United States Congress, our nation has experienced a new low that has never been seen.

"By blocking an investigation into this unwarranted and rash action, Republican leadership has abandoned our shared commitment to truth, transparency, and inclusion.

"When leaders cannot – or will not – explain their decisions to the American people, that is not responsible and transparent governance. The American people, members of Congress, and most importantly, Father Conroy, deserve to know why this happened – whatever those reasons may be."

Father Conroy is the second Catholic and first Jesuit to ever serve in U.S. history.
