Congressman Gonzalez Issues Statement Following President Trump's Announcement to Place National Guard Troops on the U.S.-Mexico Border

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump's announcement to place National Guard troops on the U.S.-Mexico border:

"Placing National Guard troops along the U.S.-Mexico border would be a waste of taxpayer money," Congressman Gonzalez said. "If we want to strategically and effectively secure our borders, Congress and the Administration should invest in U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) staffing; maintaining and upgrading aerostats, sensors and cameras as well as other technology; and providing CBP with any other resources it needs. This is just another attempt by the Trump administration to implement unnecessary - and costly - measures that will create more problems than solutions. It's the wrong approach and unwarranted, given that cities on the border are already among the safest in the nation."
