Congressman Gonzalez Invites South Texas Students to Apply for Fall Internships in Washington and Texas Offices
WASHINGTON—Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) invites South Texas college students to apply for a congressional internship in his Edinburg or Washington, D.C., offices. Applications for Fall 2017 internships are now open.
Internships run throughout the fall, spring, or summer semesters for recent graduates or students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Although internships in Congressional offices are typically unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience.
"My time as a congressional intern instilled hard-work and determination," Congressman Gonzalez said. "Our interns have the opportunity to serve their community and come away with a better understanding of how the federal government operates. I encourage every interested student in the 15th District to apply and become a part of our team."
The hours are flexible to accommodate students' course schedules, but generally run 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. when the U.S. House of Representatives is in session, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the U.S. House of Representatives is out of session.
Interns' responsibilities vary. Washington, D.C., interns may be asked to answer phones, give tours of U.S. Capitol to constituents, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings, respond to constituent letters, assist with drafting press releases, social media, speeches, or graphics. Edinburg interns may be asked to answer phones, assist with constituent services such as casework and outreach, and provide other tasks as assigned.
