Congressman Gonzalez Encourages South Texas Communities to Apply for Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has begun accepting applications for the Fiscal Year 2017 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG). The congressman encourages eligible applicants in the 15th District of Texas to apply before the application period closes at 5 p.m. EST on Friday, February 2, 2018.

"Our firefighters and first responders provide vital services to our communities," Congressman Gonzalez said. "I encourage fire departments in the 15th District to apply for grant funding, and I thank FEMA for investing in local emergency response units across the country."

FEMA has made $310,500,000 available for the AFG Programs awards to assist first-responder organizations that need support to improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies. The AFG program was established on the fundamental that providing financial assistance to meet health and safety goals should be a top priority for every community. This includes emergency response services that respond to fire, medical, any dangerous or hazardous situations.

Eligible applicants include:

  • Fire departments;
  • State Fire Training Academies;
  • And nonaffiliated emergency medical services.
