Congressman Gonzalez Encourages Local Participation in Youth Financial Literacy and Savings Behavior Program
WASHINGTON—Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced today that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has rolled out a youth savings program with participating local banks. The congressman is an ardent supporter of financial literacy programs, especially those designed for young Americans.
The FDIC has long encouraged financial institutions and schools to work together to equip young people with the financial knowledge and skills required to make significant and increasingly complex financial decisions.
"It's our responsibility to give our children the tools they need to become financially responsible adults," Congressman Gonzalez said. "This program will not only prepare America's youth to make important financial decisions, it will also result in a more stable economy down the road. I thank the FDIC, CFPB, and local banks for participating in such programs and I encourage financial institutions and schools in South Texas to take part in these important programs."
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) offers an array of programs that complement the FDIC effort and are designed to assist the nation's youth in obtaining these decision-making skills such as the Money as You Grow program. The latter program allows parents and students to work together to study the art of earning money, saving and allocating money, and utilizing earnings.
Both programs encourage fiscal responsibility and discussions about different financial topics. South Texas students and families seek to benefit from participating in these programs and Congressman Gonzalez encourages schools and financial institutions in the region to consider participating.
