Congressman Gonzalez Denounces President Trump’s Attempts to Handicap U.S. Postal Service

August 14, 2020

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued a statement following the concerning news that the Trump administration may attempt to suppress U.S. voters by tampering with the U.S. postal service (USPS):

"In the run-up to one of the most consequential elections of our lifetime, President Trump is seeking to handicap a Constitutionally mandated institution that is integral to the democratic process. President Trump has made it clear that he will do everything in his power to stop vote-by-mail, which will undoubtedly suppress certain voters while putting other lives at risk.

Americans rely on the U.S. Postal Service to deliver unemployment checks, Social Security, SNAP, and life-saving medicines. The Postal Service plays a key role for many small businesses across the country with its low-cost shipping rates, and it is more than capable of safely transporting our ballots – the president should know, he votes by mail himself.

I have been a proponent of fully funding the Postal Service to ensure the timely delivery of mail-in ballots, 2020 Census forms, and mail to every American. We cannot stand by as President Trump undermines the Postal Service for political gain."
