Congressman Gonzalez Demands Governor Abbott Focus on Fixing the Power Grid Instead of Building a Border Wall

December 15, 2021

McAllen, Texas – Today, Governor Greg Abbott announced on social media that "construction of Texas-Mexico border wall will begin soon." Stating that "in the Biden Administration's absence, Texas is stepping up to get the job done by building our own border wall."

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) responded to this recent news with the following tweet:

"Governor, please focus on our power grid first! Let's not allow more Texans to suffer and die this winter." - Congressman Gonzalez

Governor Abbott has appropriated $250 million from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDJC) budget and will use $54,423,681 in private donations to continue building a wall along the Southern Border.

In February 2021, Texans suffered widespread power outages when the ERCOT power grid failed during Winter Storm Uri. This event stranded millions without heat or electricity while temperatures plummeted, ultimately leading to 210 deaths throughout the state.

Recently, there have been conflicting reports about the readiness of the electric grid in time for winter. Texans deserve a reliable and consistent power source. Governor Abbott should turn his focus from a doomed project that does nothing except score him political points and ensure our power grid is equipped to handle any future extreme weather event.
