Congressman Gonzalez Condemns Trump Administration’s Attempt to Cut Medicaid Services
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) released a statement following his vote in favor of H.Res. 826, Expressing disapproval of the Trump administration's harmful actions towards Medicaid.
"The law is clear – Medicaid block grants are illegal," said Congressman Gonzalez. "This proposal is this administration's most recent attack on our poor and working class Americans. By allowing states the ability to block grant Medicaid, the administration is once again putting our most vulnerable at risk, as well as our providers and states. Texas has the highest rate of uninsured in the nation and simply cannot afford to weaken the protections for those enrolled in Medicaid. I intend to fight this latest effort to punish lower-income and working class people with every tool at our disposal."
Background:
On January 30, 2020, the Trump Administration announced new waiver authority, referred to as the "Health Adult Opportunity," that would allow states to receive a waiver to block grant their Medicaid programs for adults in the expansion population. The waiver undermines crucial protections of the Medicaid program and gives states broad authority to scale back important beneficiary protections, restrict eligibility standards, and limit access to prescription drugs.
