Congressman Gonzalez Begins Book Donation Program in South Texas
EDINBURG, TX – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) today announced the 15th Congressional District's participation in the Library of Congress Surplus Books Program. The congressman's office will deliver books from the Library of Congress to the Children's Hospital of Edinburg and Boys and Girls Club this Friday, September 8, 2017.
"We must instill a love for reading and learning in our nation's children and this program will do just that," Congressman Gonzalez said. "I am excited to launch the Surplus Book Program and look forward to working with the Library of Congress and organizations in South Texas to expand access to literature throughout the 15th District."
The Library of Congress's Surplus Books Program allows Members of Congress to select and donate a wide range of excess books to qualifying organizations in their districts. The congressman's first delivery will consist of 34 children books and 173 books that are middle school reading level or higher.
The congressman seeks to expand the program and donate books to other community organizations including: La Union Pueblo Entero (LUPE), The Bridges Assisted Living, local foster homes, and others. If you are interested in receiving books, please visit the congressman's website to place a request.

Background:
At all times the Library of Congress has thousands of books available for donation to eligible groups. These surplus books are not needed for the Library's own use, and so members of Congress may donate them to schools, libraries, community centers and other such organizations in their district.
Eligible organizations and institutions must be located in the United States and fall into one of the following categories: Full-time, tax-supported or nonprofit educational institution: school, school system, college, university, museum, or public library.
The Office of Congressman Vicente Gonzalez is happy to help facilitate your organization's request for Surplus Books. The books consist of a miscellaneous assortment of genres, including children's books, fiction, non-fiction, reference books, text books, test-prep books and many others. Please be advised that the books in the Surplus Books Program change frequently and are not listed in any database. This means we will do our best to find books that match your interests, but we cannot guarantee the exact books you request will be available. We recommend keeping your requests general (aka "Test-Prep books" rather than "A.P. Biology Test-Prep books").
