Congressman Gonzalez Asks President Trump for Federal Disaster Declaration Following RGV Flooding
WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) urged President Trump to declare the Rio Grande Valley a federal disaster area in response to severe flooding and rain in recent weeks. South Texas Congressmen Henry Cuellar (TX-28) and Filemon Vela (TX-34) and U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz (R-TX) also asked the president to support the declaration.
"I urge President Trump to declare the Rio Grande Valley a federal disaster area," said Congressman Gonzalez. "Severe flooding has devastated our communities once again. We desperately need federal aid to bring immediate relief and begin the rebuilding and recovery process. I thank my colleagues for their support."
"The Governor and local officials have informed us that the losses and property damage in these areas are of a magnitude that is beyond the response capability of the state and local government," the supporting congressmen and senators wrote. "We urge you to strongly support this request and provide any and all emergency measures afforded by the approval of a disaster declaration. We stand ready and willing to assist in any way possible to ensure prompt evaluation of this request."
