Congressman Gonzalez Announces Presidential Permit for the Flor de Mayo International Bridge in Cameron County, Texas
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced that the Biden Administration has authorized Cameron County to proceed with the construction, maintenance, and operation of Flor de Mayo International Bridge in Brownsville Texas, at the international boundary between the United States and Mexico.
“This authorization marks a significant milestone for Cameron County and the entire Rio Grande Valley,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Our bridges serve as vital conduits for international trade, commerce, and tourism. The approval of this project comes after a productive conversation I had with President Biden on Air Force One during his historic visit to Brownsville, Texas in late February. The Flor de Mayo International Bridge is a testament to years of hard work and collaboration between federal and local government.”
Congressman Gonzalez has consistently advocated for the approval of this project most recently working in a bipartisan way to secure language in the fiscal year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act to advance this and other international bridges in South Texas and by urging President Biden and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to implement this key provision.
The proposed Flor de Mayo International Bridge project in west Brownsville will be a passenger vehicle only (POE) and pedestrian bridge located eight river miles upstream from the existing privately owned Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge and 35.6 river miles downstream from the Free Trade Bridge at Los Indios, which is co-owned by Cameron County, the City of Harlingen, and the City of San Benito.
