Congressman Gonzalez Announces Over $17.7 Million in Federal Funding to Support Valley Cities and Entities Handling Migrant Influxes
Funding Comes from the Department of Homeland Security’s Shelter and Services Program
WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced a total of $17,759,130 allocated from the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Shelter and Services Program (SSP), which financially supports border communities providing humanitarian services to migrants. This funding will go directly to eligible local governments and non-federal entities throughout South Texas. SSP replaces DHS’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program, which also funded various communities in South Texas as previously announced last year.
“South Texas and other regions along the U.S.-Mexico border have long felt the impacts of migration,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “We cannot let our local governments and organizations alone bear the financial and logistical burden of providing housing, food, and shelter for migrants released from DHS custody. I am pleased to announce the allocation of these SSP funds to multiple community partners in our region, allowing qualified professionals to provide humanitarian assistance while lessening the burden on our Customs and Border Protection personnel.
This funding was approved through the Fiscal Year 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act, which Congressman Gonzalez voted for. A total of $300 million will be allocated nationwide through the SSP program. Entities in South Texas that will receive SSP funding are as follows:
$3,921,965 for the City of McAllen
$216,000 for Iglesia Bautista West Brownsville
$1,921,965 for the City of Brownsville
$350,000 for the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center
$7,421,965 for Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley
$1,636,235 for Good Neighbor Settlement House
$615,000 for the Salvation Army Corps Center
$1,100,000 for La Posada Providencia
$360,000 for Team Brownsville
