Congressman Gonzalez Announces Nearly $700 Million For Texas Transit Projects

April 29, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced that $699,023,217 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 will support transit upgrades and expansions throughout Texas this year. Of the total allocation, $18,288,620 of these funds are dedicated to local transit projects in Brownsville, McAllen, Harlingen, and the surrounding areas.

“Our transportation infrastructure touches every aspect of our lives,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Whether it's the food we eat coming in from trucks on the highway, a grandparent using the local bus to visit their grandchildren, or kids riding a school bus in the morning — our transit systems must be accessible, reliable, and most of all, safe. I’m happy to deliver more than $18 million to South Texas from the Federal Transit Administration so that we can accomplish just that.”

This investment will equip our local transit authorities to purchase new buses, address repair backlogs, modernize fleets, and upgrade transportation technology. Funding for South Texas will support enhanced mobility for seniors and the disabled and provide critical investments in buses, bus facilities, and other key transit projects.

Specifically, three cities in South Texas will receive the funding through the Department of Transportation’s Urbanized Area Apportionments and select FTA Programs:

-Brownsville: $4,027,292

-McAllen: $11,517,119

-Harlingen: $2,744,209*

*These funds will be routed through the State of Texas.
