Congressman Gonzalez Announces Almost $1.5 Million for UTRGV’s STEM and Diversity Programs
WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced today that the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has received $1,480,002 in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to stimulate the university's Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Program and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses.
"STEM programs present limitless opportunities for students of all backgrounds," Congressman Gonzalez said. "This new funding will allow UTRGV to continue engaging students in developing fields. I will continue to work with UTRGV, and all partners in the Rio Grande Valley, to secure federal funds that create opportunities for all South Texans."
This project will increasing the retention and graduation rates of undergraduate students in science and mathematics, advancing the aims of the HSI Program. UTRGV has a history of offering well-designed, high impact STEM courses that build upon culture, community engagement, and regionally-relevant research. The award will also allow for the development of new classes in Community Engaged Scholarship and Learning. By emphasizing the broader, societal relevance of STEM fields, these new courses will help first year students develop a sense of belonging and commitment. It is expected that these innovations will enhance students' success in STEM, thus helping to satisfy the national need to increase diversity in STEM fields.
