Congressman Gonzalez Announces $50 Million Award to Support the Direct Air Capture Facility Project in Kleberg County, Texas

October 1, 2024

KLEBERG COUNTY, TEXAS –Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Regional Direct Air Capture Hubs program will provide up to $500 million over time to support the development of the South Texas Direct Air Capture Hub (DAC) in Kleberg County. The project will receive an initial award of $50 million to support the project development phase. Funding will become available as the project progresses over the next two years.

The award is provided through last year’s previously announced $600 million for the South Texas DAC facility made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law-funded Regional Direct Air Capture (DAC) Hubs program.

“I’m grateful that this state-of-the-art-project is on track and that South Texas ingenuity and grit will lead to its completion,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Thanks to this initial funding and our public-private partnerships, we are creating a healthier planet right here in Kleberg County.I am proud to continue to support the work that we, as South Texans, can achieve in mitigating the harmful effects of carbon dioxide.”

The South Texas DAC Hub – one of only two in the nation – is expected to create approximately 2,500 jobs in construction, operations, and maintenance. Once completed, this facility will remove approximately 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
