Congressman Gonzalez Announces $431,000 NeighborWorks Grant for South Texas Housing
WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced that NeighborWorks America, an organization funded by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, has awarded a $431,000 grant to Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc. Affordable Homes of South Texas will use the funds to promote affordable housing, revitalize neighborhoods, and spur job growth in Texas.
"I am pleased to see organizations like NeighborWorks devote resources to the 15th District," Congressman Gonzalez said. "This grant will fund important local programs that improve South Texans' quality of life."
Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc., a NeighborWorks America organization, functions as a mortgage lender and general contractor to support households earning only 80 percent of the local median income or those with specialized needs. Applicants can also enroll in rehab or home replacement programs that work to improve substandard living conditions.

- New Beginnings – Home replacement program for disabled clients or those age 62 and older. Residents of McAllen, Texas are eligible for this program.
- Project Imagine Tomorrow – Identifies strategies for homeowners to repair existing homes or demolish through tax incentives, a voluntary demolition program, and practical home mortgage financing solutions. Residents of McAllen, Texas are eligible for this program.
- Amy Young Program – Provides a one-time grant of up to $20,000 for individuals with disabilities to improve accessibility of their homes. Residents of Hidalgo and Cameron Counties are eligible for this program.
- Neighborhood Housing Program – This program assists households with a median income that is 80 percent of the local median income. Those who have lived in Pharr, Texas for at least one year and are residents of the city are eligible for this program.
The $431,000 in the grant funding for FY18 was included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018. The congressman looks forward to this community building and improvement opportunity for residents throughout the 15th District of Texas.
