Congressman Gonzalez Announces $2.9 Million for UTRGV School of Medicine Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center
McAllen, Texas – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced a $2.9 million National Institute on Aging grant to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's (UTRGV) School of Medicine. This award will help UTRGV's Alzheimer's Disease Resource Center for Minority Aging Research complete a community outreach program to identify and research the effects of Alzheimer's in the Rio Grande Valley.
"UTRGV continues to conduct groundbreaking research that will benefit our community for generations to come," stated Congressman Gonzalez. "Unfortunately, South Texas has the highest rate of Alzheimer's in the country. Many people in South Texas know someone who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and witnessed its detrimental and devastating effects. I applaud the work UTRGV continues to do for our region and look forward to what this research will produce."
"One of UTRGV's priorities is to conduct research that greatly impacts the Rio Grande Valley community, and this grant allows us to do that by focusing on Hispanic elders suffering from Alzheimer's," UTRGV President Guy Bailey said. "I thank everyone associated with our School of Medicine's Alzheimer's Disease and Resource Center for Minority Aging Research and Congressman Gonzalez for helping UTRGV obtain this lifechanging funding."
