Congressman Gonzalez Announces the 2018 Congressional Art Competition

March 1, 2018

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced the 2018 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery. This year's theme for the 15th District of Texas is ‘Home of the Brave,' a celebration of our men and women in uniform. The congressman welcomes submissions from Monday, April 9, 2018, until Friday, April 20, 2018.

Student submissions will be placed on display in the district and the winning piece will be featured in the U.S. Capitol. The winner will be awarded a trip to Washington, D.C. and will receive an offer to accept a $3,000 art scholarship to attend Savannah College of Arts and Design, or Tennessee Wesleyan College.

"Every day we draw inspiration from our servicemembers and veterans," Congressman Gonzalez said. "This year's Congressional Art Competition will allow young artists in the 15th District to honor the contributions and the courage of these brave men and women—past and present—through artistic expression."

Inspiration for the theme comes from the more than 600 guardsmen, 34,000 veterans, and 780 servicemembers who call the 15th District home. Since coming to Congress, Congressman Gonzalez has made it his mission to be a voice for military personnel, veterans, and their families.

Last year, the congressman introduced H.R. 3429, the Repatriate Our Patriots Act, to create a pathway to citizenship for wrongly deported U.S. veterans, who were honorably discharged and held a clean record prior to service. The congressman also spent last Thanksgiving with U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan, including with one servicemember from Seguin, Texas.

The congressman encourages all eligible participants to design, create, and submit artwork for consideration that embodies the very sacrifices and selflessness of our military.
