Congressman Gonzalez Announces $176 Million to Help Families Stay Safe this Winter

November 21, 2023

BROWNSVILLE, TX – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced more than $176 million to the state of Texas to assist low-income families ahead of the winter season through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Administered  by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), LIHEAP helps low-income households pay energy bills such as heating and cooling, makes energy-related home repairs more affordable, and weatherizes homes to make them more energy efficient.

“It is unacceptable that one in four households struggle to pay their energy bills,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Maintaining safe indoor temperatures is crucial for the health and wellbeing of households with children, older adults, or anyone who has a chronic illness. LIHEAP will help low-income South Texas families pay their home heating costs this winter, and when summer rolls around, their home cooling costs as well.”

Texas was awarded $168,029,706 from LIHEAP block grant funding and $8,394,348 through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act – totaling $176,424,054.
