Congressman Gonzalez Announces $174,857 for UTRGV’s Rural Development Program

October 10, 2018

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development program has approved a $174,857 grant for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).

This funding will allow UTRGV to deliver technical assistance to members of two Socially Disadvantaged Groups in rural Central and South Texas: Hispanics and women. Group training and workshops, as well as one-on-one counseling sessions, will be provided to both of the aforementioned groups through cooperatives and Cooperative Development Centers.

"Every person in rural Texas deserves the same access to economic opportunity and long-term financial stability as people living in urban communities," Congressman Gonzalez said. "I thank the USDA for providing women and Hispanics in our region with the tools necessary to harness their skills and talents. UTRGV will serve as the vehicle to provide technical assistance to these folks, and I thank the university for leading such efforts. I will continue to work to ensure that the door remains open for all people to be able to pioneer their own success."

Each fiscal year, applications are requested through a Notice published in the Federal Register and an announcement posted on Grants.gov. For more information about USDA Rural Development programs in Texas, click here.
