Bipartisan PROTECT Taiwan Act, Championed by Congressmen Gonzalez and Lucas, Clears House Financial Services Committee

March 2, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez released the following statement after his bill, H.R. 803, the Pressure Regulatory Organizations To End Chinese Threats to Taiwan Act, or the PROTECT Taiwan Act, was favorably reported out by the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, February 28, 2023:

"Taiwan deserves to live in freedom without fear or intimidation from China's tyrannical regime," stated Congressman Gonzalez. "I am proud to co-lead this bipartisan, critical piece of legislation with my friend, Congressman Lucas, as we continue to show America's determination to freedom. We will continue to defend America's allies and stand up to China's aggressive posture towards the people of Taiwan."

"The greatest generational challenge the United States faces is the economic, political, and national security threat of the Chinese Communist Party. In order to deter China from emulating the rogue aggression shown by Russia, Congress must take the necessary steps to ensure the People's Republic of China would be subject to significant financial and economic sanctions should Beijing threaten the security, social, or economic system of the people on Taiwan," said Congressman Lucas (OK-3). "The PROTECT Taiwan Act sends a signal to Beijing that China would be held accountable, both economically and financially, for its aggression towards Taiwan."

The PROTECT Taiwan Act would, upon notice to Congress from the President of the United States declaring any threat to the people of Taiwan, exclude government officials of the Chinese Communist Party from financial and intergovernmental forums.
