Congressman Gonzalez Statement on House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s Senseless Border Wall Funding Proposal
WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued the following statement in response to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s plan to introduce a bill that fully funds the administration’s proposed border wall on the U.S.-Mexico Border.
“Leader McCarthy is on the wrong side of the border security argument and will be on the wrong side of history if this plan comes to fruition. My colleagues on the other side of the aisle preach private property rights and fiscal conservatism but are willing to throw away billions – yes, billions – of taxpayer dollars on an archaic, ineffective solution and infringe on the rights of landowners.
How about we provide funding to fully staff U.S. Customs and Border Protection, invest in new, advanced surveillance technology, and replace outdated cameras and sensors? How about working with our partners in Mexico and Central America to develop concrete strategies to address insecurity and create sustainable economic growth?
I ask that the House Majority Leader, and any other Member of Congress who supports a physical barrier, to put down their Lincoln Logs and approach border security solutions in a mature, realistic manner. I have opposed a physical barrier on the U.S.-Mexico Border, I will continue to reject incomplete border security solutions, and I will not stand down.”
